Black Professor with NY Plates in Vermont Told ‘To Leave’ State

A black professor driving through Vermont with his 11-year-old son on Friday thought two unknown vehicles approaching and flagging him down might need some help. Instead, he was told that he “wasn’t wanted in Vermont” and told to leave by one of two white men who approached him.

Vermont state police are investigating the alleged “bias-related incident” that occurred just ten minutes away from Dartmouth College. While the professor was able to de-escalate the situation verbally, he did say he was scared for his son and for himself.

WPTZ in Burlington says the incident upset Vermont Governor Phil Scott, leading him to speak with the man personally. In a press conference, the Governor said “I want to make it clear. I have no tolerance for this type of thing.” Even though Vermont’s still in lock down, the governor said any out-of-state residents who own property in Vermont, like the professor does, are still welcome.
