The coronavirus pandemic has cancelled a longtime patriotic tradition – placing flags on veterans’ graves in honor of Memorial Day.

The Department of Veteran Affairs has cancelled all public flag-placing events – including ones annually carried out by the Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts, and other groups.

Instead, a small, private wreath-laying ceremony will be held at each VA cemetary.
