Melissa Etheridge shared on Twitter that she joins “the hundreds of thousands of families who have lost loved ones to opioid addiction”, while revealing that she lost her 21-year-old son, Beckett, to an overdose.

Etheridge wrote Wednesday “My son, Beckett, who was just 21, struggled to overcome his addiction and succumbed to it today. My heart is broken. We wonder what we could have done to save him. In the end we know he is out of pain now.”

Beckett was born to Etheridge and then-partner Julie Cypher through artificial insemination in 1998. It was later revealed that singer-songwriter David Crosby was Beckett’s biological father.
