12-Year-Old Chicago Boy becomes Illinois’ Youngest COVID-19 Fatality

A 12-year-old Chicago boy has become Illinois’ youngest person to die from COVID-19.

Ernesto Guzman, who passed away Thursday, is among 126 Cook County residents who died from the virus between Wednesday and Thursday as the state continues to struggle with its escalating number of cases. The county’s death toll is now 2,756. Although most young people who have contracted the coronavirus have made full recoveries, Guzman was already suffering from a rare disease that damages nerves, weakens muscles and compromises immune systems, according to the Cook County Coroner’s Office.

A GoFundMe page set up for Guzman’s family remembers the youth as someone who “loved Fortnite, art projects, science experiments, jokes and riddles, spending time with friends, and for being an incredibly sweet and loving confidant to everyone he met.”
