The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has revealed it expects the COVID-19 death toll in the U.S. to exceed 100,000 by June 1st.

The unsettling prediction, announced Friday, is based on data from 13 separate forecasting models, CDC officials say. The news comes one day after former head of Health and Human Services Rick Bright told a House committee the country could be facing “the darkest winter in modern history.”

Also on Friday, numerous restaurants, shopping malls and businesses around the country began reopening as coronavirus restrictions expired in several states.
