Phyllis George, 1971’s Miss America who would later become a pioneer in female sportscasting by co-hosting CBS’s The NFL Today in 1975, passed Thursday at 70 after a battle with a blood disorder.

George spent three seasons on the show beginning in 1975 and would later return for another 3 seasons in 1980. George also covered the Preakness Stakes and Belmont Stakes horse races.

Married to Kentucky Fired Chicken and Boston Celtics owner John Y. Brown, Jr. from 1979 to 1998, she served as Kentucky’s First Lady when her husband would become governor.

George’s The NFL Today co-host Brent Musburger tweeted “Phyllis didn’t receive nearly enough credit for opening the sports broadcasting door for dozens of talented women who took her lead and soared.”
