According to numerous studies, if the vast majority of us were wearing masks in public, we could halt the spread of the coronavirus until a vaccine is ready.

But how does it work? Data scientist Jeremy Howard explains that facial coverings prevent the spray of invisible droplets that are released when a person speaks or breathes.

Since some can be infected with COVID-19 without showing symptoms, the best advice would be to have everyone protected while the pandemic plays out.

Howard, who works at the University of San Francisco, along with 18 other experts, are calling for the governors in all 50 states to have “officials require cloth masks to be worn in all public places, such as stores, transportation systems, and public buildings.”
