Officials preaching fireworks safety for July 4th

The Illinois State Fire Marshall’s Office and the Chicago Fire Department are asking residents to leave fireworks to professionals this 4th of July weekend.

Chicago Fire Commissioner Annette Nance-Holt wants residents to remember that fireworks of any kind, including sparklers are illegal in Chicago.

Last July, 44 medical facilities reported 168 fireworks related injuries across the state. That number includes 20 dismemberments or amputations.

Fire Marshal Spokesperson JC Fultz recommends glow sticks or silly string for children instead of sparklers.
