Republicans in Illinois and New York share something in common. They are both trying to thrive in a state dominated by Democrats. Lee Zeldin, a former Congressman from New York, ran for governor in the state in 2022. He lost to Kathy Hochul, but received 47% of the vote which was the highest percentage a Republican candidate for Governor in New York had received since 2002.
Zeldin spoke to Illinois Republicans just outside of Milwaukee on the morning of day 2 of the Republican National Convention. He shared his frustrations with trying to get things done in his home state, likening them to his Illinois colleagues.
Zeldin discussed Chicagoans showing up to the city council frustrated about funds going to migrants rather than the people that live in the city and that going after those people for votes is what needs to happen.
He also talked about fighting Democrats changing voting laws.
On Wednesday, Illinois Republican Party Chairman-elect Kathy Salvi is expected to speak.
