Normally, the sitting president speaks on the last night of his party’s convention, but Joe Biden closed out night one of the DNC at the United Center. Biden wiped tears from his eyes after his daughter Ashley introduced him. The crowd held up signs that said, “WE ♥️ JOE.”

Kamala Harris made a surprise and unscheduled appearance on stage and spoke for a few minutes.

Brandon Johnson opened up a night of speeches welcoming Democrats to the city he runs. Other Chicago and Illinois Democrats spoke on night 1 as well. Congresswoman Lauren Underwood from Illinois’s 14th District representing Chicago’s western suburbs spoke. Senator Dick Durbin made a speech as well. Former Chicago Bulls sharpshooter Steve Kerr returned to the building where won three championships to talk.

Other speakers who received the biggest ovations from the United Center crowd were Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and Hillary Clinton.
