Oprah Winfrey made a surprise appearance at the DNC on Wednesday night at the United Center. Longtime friend Gayle King said that Oprah was inclined to stay out of the political arena this year, but chose to appear after working on a last minute speech that afternoon.

Still a favorite in Chicago after her years as a local and national talk show host and celebrity, she was welcomed with loud cheers and applause. “What we’re going to do is elect Kamala Harris as the next president of the United States,” she said after taking the stage. During her approximately 10 minute speech, Winfrey urged “Let us chose common sense over nonsense” 

Winfrey endorsed Hillary Clinton in 2016 and Joe Biden in 2020.
