A poll of young Americans conducted by the Institute of Politics at Harvard Kennedy School shows that “[w]hile [President Donald] Trump’s overall approval has remained stable, support for Democrats has eroded.”
“The share of young Americans who approve of Congressional Democrats has dropped nineteen points since Spring 2017—from 42% to just 23%. In that same period, approval of Congressional Republicans has held steady, inching up slightly from 28% to 29%,” reported The Spring 2025 Harvard Youth Poll.
Of the respondents, 51% said the country is on the wrong track and almost one-third said they aren’t sure. Study authors said that reflects a generation defined by “political pessimism and uncertainty.”
Asked to rate the U.S. today with the leadership of Trump, only 25% said the country is in a better position. Forty-one percent said President Joe Biden had the nation moving in a better direction. Fourteen percent said they saw no difference between the two leaders, and 17% said they were unsure.
Trump’s approval rating among the respondents was at 31%, only 1 point lower than the 32% he was given in 2017 and just 2 points off the 29% that was recorded in 2020.
Politics aside, two findings from the survey show young Americans are having a hard time in general. More than 40% of the respondents said they’re “barely getting by” financially. Only 16% said they are doing well or very well. Only 17% of those polled feel a “deep social connection.”
The poll of 2,096 18- to 29-year-old U.S. residents was conducted March 14 and 25 and has a margin of error of +/- 3.21%.
