(ANAHEIM, CA) — Prior to tonight’s game at the Los Angeles Angels, the Chicago White Sox purchased the contract of right-handed pitcher Gregory Infante from Class AAA Charlotte and transferred catcher Geovany Soto to the 60-day disabled list. Infante takes the roster spot of infielder Cody Asche, who was optioned to Charlotte following yesterday’s game vs. San Diego.
Soto, 34, is scheduled to undergo arthroscopic surgery on Tuesday in Chicago for debridement with loose body removal on his right elbow. His recovery is scheduled to take a minimum of 12 weeks. Soto was placed on the 10-day disabled list for the second time this season on May 10 with right elbow inflammation. He is batting .190 (8-42) with three home runs and nine RBI over 13 games in 2017.
Infante, 29, has gone 0-1 with a 2.08 ERA (3 ER/13.0 IP), three saves, 16 strikeouts and a .163 opponents average (7-43) over 10 relief appearances with Charlotte this season. He has limited left-handers to a .100 average (2-20), and held opponents to a .154 average with RISP (2-13) in 2017. Infante signed with Chicago as a free agent on January 20, 2017.
Infante, a native of Caracas, Venezuela, appeared in 10 games with the White Sox in 2010, his only major-league season. He went 0-0 with a 0.00 ERA (4.2 IP), allowing two hits with four walks and five strikeouts over 4.2 scoreless IP. Infante originally was signed by Chicago as a non-drafted free agent on May 5, 2006.
Following the moves, the White Sox 40-man roster remains at 40.
