(CHICAGO) At City Hall, two more dark clouds are threatening to raise taxes yet again.
When you pay local sales taxes at the store, the state actually collects and remits the money to cities, counties, towns and villages. The state used to do this for free, but under Bruce Rauner the state is now charging a 2% fee. This is a multi-million dollar cost to Chicago and Cook County.
Dark cloud #2 is Civic Federation President Lawrence Msall warning aldermen this week about pensions, noting “After the five-year ramp of the police and fire pension fund, we’re gonna need hundreds of millions of dollars in either cuts of existing programs or some new revenue just to stay on that funding schedule.”
That pressure begins arriving in 2020.
