City water: “People should not be panicked”

By Bill Cameron, WLS-AM News

(CHICAGO) At City Hall, there’s a new scare about lead in city water.

City Hall claims the water still meets or exceeds EPA lead levels, but the mayor’s office went into damage control mode after Health Commissioner Dr. Julie Morita said this about elevated levels in 17% of a sample of service lines that have had water meters installed.

“People, people should not be panicked, says Morita. “That is a critical message and you can help us do that by not making this a panic message. When you look at the data, this should be very reassuring.”

She said overall lead levels have been declining in Chicago, but the city is still giving the homes in question free water filters and is ordering a study on the feasibility of replacing service lines between water mains in the streets to customers homes and other property.
