German Chancellor Angela Merkel has been awarded an honorary degree from Harvard.

Merkel was invited to give the keynote speech at the university’s 368th commencement on Thursday night.

The 64-year-old Merkel has served as Germany’s chancellor since 2005, but plans to step down at the end of her current fourth term. Harvard President Larry Bacow called her “one of the most influential statespeople of our time”.
