A retired Marine lieutenant colonel and combat pilot has announced that she will run against Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnel. Amy McGrath announced her bid on Twitter with a video saying that McConnell has “turned Washington into something we all despise.”

Democrats are hoping that McGrath, who was defeated in a 2018 House race by Andy Barr 51%-48%, will defeat McConnell with her strong capabilities to raise funds. The 2020 Senate race is expected to be one of the most expensive races in election history.

McConnell was elected to Senate in 1984 and has been Republican leader since 2007. He posted a video on his website with McGrath making comments about progressivism and the border wall.
