Will Apple buy up Intel’s abandoned smartphone modem business? A report in the Wall Street Journal says yes.

The $1-billion deal could be announced as early as next week following an announcement by Intel back in April it was exiting the 5G mobile modem business after Apple reached a surprise settlement with Qualcomm.

While Apple has a new deal with Qualcomm, the company was already reportedly working on developing its own in-house modems.
