A gas station clerk in Detroit tried to shoot at a potato chip thief but ended up hitting a bystander instead.

Police say the 27-year-old clerk grabbed a gun after a customer tried to run off with several bags of potato chips. He fired a shot through the glass front door but missed the thief and hit a bystander in the chest.

The victim is currently in serious condition. Both the clerk and the chip thief were arrested, but police haven’t yet said if the clerk will be charged with a crime.
