A 3-year-old is dead after shooting himself in the face in a Chicago home Sunday afternoon.

Family told police they were in another room when they heard a gunshot, then found the boy with the weapon. The child was pronounced dead at hospital.

Police told ABC News they believe it was an accident and that no arrests have been made.

According to CDC data, a child accidentally shoots themselves or another child an average of eight times every day in the US.
