Senate majority leader Mitch McConnell has shown that even the most thick-skinned politician can reach a breaking point. He’s been criticized as a “Russian asset” and has been dubbed “Moscow Mitch after blocking bills that would warn of foreign interference in U.S. elections.

McConnell took the floor Monday to defend himself, calling the actions of his critics “modern-day McCarthyism” and saying “Calling an American official treasonous because of policy disagreement, if anything, is an asset to the Russians. It’s disgusting behavior.”

McConnell says he doesn’t want to nationalize election authority as that the decision for election backup and safety should be made by the states.
