The nation was rocked by two deadly mass shootings in El Paso and Dayton over the weekend. But now authorities say another potential shooting was avoided thanks to the FBI.

19-year-old William Patrick Williams of Lubbock, TX was arrested last month after telling his grandmother he planned to “shoot up” a hotel and “commit suicide by cop”.

The grandmother persuaded Williams to go to a hospital instead, where he was arrested. Police found an AK-47 rifle, ammunition, and other items in a hotel room he had rented.

U.S. Attorney Nealy Cox praised Williams’ grandmother for coming forward, calling it “a tragedy averted”.
