Former Vice President Joe Biden is calling for a ban on assault weapons and a federal gun buyback program in response to the recent mass shootings.

Biden told CNN’s Anderson Cooper that assault weapons “should be illegal – period”, adding “the Second Amendment doesn’t say you can’t restrict the kinds of weapons people can own.”

Biden also called for universal background checks and said he would establish a federal gun buyback program aimed at reducing the number of firearms on the streets.
