In a controversial decision, a grand jury on Wednesday voted against charging an off-duty Los Angeles police officer who killed an unarmed man and wounded his parents in a Costco parking lot.
Jurors decided Officer Salvador Sanchez acted responsibly when he opened fire on the family in the June 14th incident, which occurred after 32-year-old Kenneth French — who was mentally disabled — attacked Sanchez. “It was out of the blue, and the officer wasn’t expecting it – he’s hit in the back of his head while he’s holding his child in his hands,” Riverside County D.A. Mike Hestrin says. “I can only imagine those facts played into the jury’s decision here.”
