Chicago teachers are planning to walk off the job if a new union deal isn’t in place by next month.

On Thursday, the Chicago Teachers Union voted overwhelmingly to authorize a mid-October strike, which would be joined by unions representing school custodians and city park workers.

Union leaders are still hoping to reach an agreement before then, with bargaining sessions planned for Friday and all next week. Chicago Mayor Lori Lightfoot has expressed a desire to “get a deal done”.
