An elderly French woman had no idea that hanging on the wall in her kitchen was a thought to be lost masterpiece from the 13th century.
The 90-year-old had the painting “Christ Mocked” from artist Cimabue for so long, she had forgotten how she acquired it.
After expert testing, the unsigned 8×10-inch painting on wood was determined to be authentic and went to the auction block where it sold for a record $26.6 million.
Acteon Auction House says the woman will receive “the majority” of the sale money.
