600-Year-Old Castle in Japan Devastated by Fire

Shuri Castle, a 600-year-old World Heritage site that is according to locals, revered like a God in Japan, has been reduced to it’s skeletal frame after a fire Wednesday night.

Over twelve fire trucks were called to the site and were still battling the blaze early Thursday morning. Residents in Naha City were forced to evacuate as fears of the fire spreading grew.

The castle, built during the Ryukyu Kingdom in the 14th century, had suffered fires before, including a large fire during the battle of Okinawa in 1945. Officials are investigating the cause of the blaze.
