Illinois Man Sentenced to 6 Years after 26th Suspended License Violation

An judge in Illinois has made sure a man who’s been arrested 26 times for driving on a suspended license won’t be getting behind the wheel again anytime soon.

In a sentence handed down Monday, 62-year-old Round Lake Beach resident Steven Knutson was ordered to spend the next six years in prison. The straw that apparently broke the camel’s back occurred in March, when Knutson crashed his pickup into a parked car, prosecutors say. As in the previous 25 incidents, Knutson was found to be driving without a license, which was suspended in 2010 for aggravated drunk driving.

Secretary of State spokesman Dave Druker says he’s unaware of anyone in Illinois with more suspended license convictions. “If it’s not a record, it’s right up there,” Druker says. “This is a decision we like to see from the courts because it sends a message that getting behind the wheel of a car without a license is very serious.”
