Looks like the folks in Andrews, North Carolina are going to have to figure out a new way to ring in the new year; the city has officially ended their live opossum drop.

The nearly 30-year tradition of lowering a live opossum in a plexiglass box was the town’s “redneck response” to New York City’s ball drop. The mayor, however, told the Wall Street Journal that after years of protests and petitions from animal rights groups “They can stick a fork in it. It’s done.”

The town’s new year’s eve plans? A pro-wrestling match and a “womanless” beauty pageant.
