Hawaii, Alaska Ranked Worst Retirement States

They might be nice to visit, but you sure wouldn’t want to retire in Hawaii or Alaska.

That’s according to a new study that ranks the best U.S. states in which to retire. Although it’s considered a tropical paradise to most people living in the continental U.S., Hawaii ranks dead last on the list of 50 states. Alaska is ranked 49th, just behind California. According to Blacktower Financial Management Group, the West Coast state is the third worst in which to retire due to unaffordable housing costs.

On the other end of the list, Iowa, Minnesota and Vermont make up the top three because of their affordable housing costs and low crime rates, according to the study.
