Officials Say No Plans To Postpone Tokyo Olympics

Coronavirus may have suspended the NBA, NHL, and MLS seasons, canceled the NCAA tournaments, and pushed back baseball’s opening day, but officials won’t let that happen to the Summer Games in Tokyo.

According to Australian team chef de mission Ian Chesterman, a postponement to the July 24 start is not in the cards.

“That’s always been the stated position of the Olympic Committee. That the Games go ahead or are canceled,” Chesterman said at Thursday’s press conference, adding, “Fortunately, very few have been canceled.”

Australian Olympic Committee chief executive Matt Carroll revealed the reasoning, saying a delay would affect the 2022 Winter Games as well as the FIFA World Cups and Olympics in 2024.
