As the coronavirus pandemic continues to wreak havoc on the airline industry, British Airways has announced plans to lay off as many as 12,000 employees.

The news comes just hours after the airlines’ parent company, IAG, reported a first quarter loss of $580 million after revenue dropped 13 percent in March.

Saying they expect it will take years for the industry to recover from the coronavirus financial crisis, IAG officials revealed the layoffs are part of a massive restructuring plan that’s underway at British Airways.
