Man Steals Louisian Police Car to Commit Crimes in Texas

A Louisiana man is dead after he stole an unmarked police car and used it to embark on a crime spree in Texas, police say.

Opelousas resident Leon Jones III, 25, reportedly stole the vehicle Tuesday when an officer left it unlocked and running while conducting a narcotics investigation, according to police spokesman Mark Guidry. Jones then drove the car — which had a rifle, body armor and the officer’s badge in it — to Port Arthur, Texas, where he pulled the rifle on a couple in an attempt to steal their car, says Port Arthur Police Chief Timothy Duriso. However, they were able to drive off unharmed.

Jones then approached a man and a woman who were fishing for crab, threatening to shoot them if they didn’t give him money, Duriso says. The man pulled a gun on Jones, the two exchanged fire and Jones was killed, Duriso says. The man was not injured.
