Air Quality Improving Amid Coronavirus Pandemic

Stay-at-home orders may have left streets all over the U.S. looking barren, but they may be doing wonders for the air quality.

That’s according NASA, which on Thursday released a map that shows decreasing pollution over several areas of the northeastern United States. However, at least one air quality expert says it’s too early to tell how big an impact the drop in driving has caused.

Northwestern University’s Anastasia Montgomery says air pollution typically peaks in the summer, and the map could be showing clear spots that appear on the map could very well be normal for this time of year. “We’re not currently in a pollution season,” she says. “We would expect to see greater changes in air quality as we head towards the summer.”
