US Olympic Bobsledder takes his Own Life

Olympic bobsledder Pavle Jovanovic, who won a bronze medal in 2004, has taken his own life, Team USA has announced. Jovanovic was 43 years old.

“The winter sports community has suffered a tragic loss,” says Jovanovic’s teammate, Aron McGuire. “Pavle’s passion and commitment towards bobsled was seen and felt by his teammates, coaches, competitors, and fans of the sport.” Although the tragic incident occurred May 3rd, Jovanovic’s death was just announced Monday.

Jovanovic brought home a bronze medal from the World Championships seven years after he took up the sport in 1997. He also competed in the 2006 Winter Olympics, where he finished 7th in the two-man and four-man bobsledding events. Coach Greg Sand says he’ll always remember Jovanovic, who’s been praised for being the best brakeman in the sport, as a “one-of-a-kind original.”
