Female Baseball Player who Inspired ‘A League of Their Own’ Dies at 101

Mary Pratt, the female baseball pitcher who helped inspire the film “A League of their Own,” has died. She was 101 years old.

Pratt passed away from natural causes on May 6th in a nursing home, her nephew, Walter Pratt, revealed Monday. Pratt pitched for the All-American Girls Professional Baseball League from 1943 until 1947. “We are terribly sad to report that former Rockford Peaches and Kenosha Comets pitcher, Mary Pratt, passed away on May 6th, the league tweeted Monday. “Mary was the last known original Peaches player that played on the 1943 team. Her stories, her energy will be missed for a long time.”

Before serving as an inspiration for the 1992 Tom Hanks comedy, Pratt spent 46 years teaching P.E. in Bridgeport, Connecticut. She was later inducted into the Boston University Hall of Fame and the Boston Garden Hall of Fame.
