Detroit Swimming Coach Charged in Student’s Drowning Death

A high school swimming coach in Detroit has been charged in the drowning death of one of his students.

An involuntary manslaughter charge was filed Tuesday against 47-year-old Kareem Sigler, a teacher at Mumford High School, the Detroit Police Department reveals. Investigators say Sigler failed to properly supervise 15-year-old De’Sean Blanding, who died in the school’s pool February 24th. Police say Sigler had left the room when Blanding drowned.

Prosecutor Kym Worthy says officials decided to charge Sigler after determining the teen’s death could have been prevented. “We are alleging that the evidence in this case shows that the death of Mr. Blanding could have been prevented,” Worthy says. “While swimming pools are certainly desirable, they can also be death traps without proper, necessary, and needed supervision and preparedness.”
