A woman suffered severe burns after falling into a thermal feature at Yellowstone National Park, according to Montana authorities.

The incident occurred Tuesday after the unidentified woman reportedly entered the park illegally to take photos of the Old Faithful geyser, police say. As she took a step backward, she apparently lost her footing and fell into the thermal feature, which is a hole in Earth’s crust that emits scalding steam. Despite the severity of her injuries, the woman managed to climb out of the hole herself and seek help, park rangers say.

The woman’s current condition has not been revealed.
