Despite claims that the country has made it through the worst of the coronavirus pandemic, it’s still thriving in Illinois, which on Wednesday reported its most deaths in a single day so far.

The Illinois Department of Public Health says 192 people died of COVID-19 between Tuesday and Wednesday, bringing the state’s death toll to 3,792. The past 24 hours also saw 1,677 new cases for a total of 84,698. Currently, there are 4,563 residents being treated in hospitals, 714 of whom are on ventilators, the department reports.

“Please know people of all ages are falling victim to this virus,” says health department director Dr. Ngozi Ezike. “This is a real disease; this is a serious disease. It’s not a hoax and people need to continue taking it seriously.”
