Anti-Chokehold Bill Passes New York Assembly

The New York State Assembly has passed the Eric Garner Anti-Chokehold Act.

The bill, named after Eric Garner who was killed back in 2014 by a chokehold from a New York City police officer, will make using chokeholds that result in injury or death a criminal act punishable by 15 years in prison.

Interestingly enough, the use of chokeholds had already been banned by the NYPD back in 1993.

According to the New York State Assembly, over 900 people have reported being put in a chokehold by New York cops since Garner’s death. Governor Andrew Cuomo has already stated he will sign the bill into law.
