University of Cincinnati Votes to Remove Marge Schott’s Name from Stadium

The University of Cincinnati’s board of trustees voted unanimously on Monday to remove Marge Schott’s name from their baseball stadium and library over her racist comments.

During her time as MLB owner of the Cincinnati Reds, Schott was repeatedly suspended for using racist slurs against black players. She also used racists remarks against Jews and praised Adolf Hitler. She was forced to sell her controlling stake in the team in 1999. After her death in 2004, Schott’s foundation made a $2 million donation to build the University’s baseball stadium.

The school’s president, who recommended taking Schott’s name off the stadium, said in a statement that “Schott’s record of racism and bigotry stands at stark odds with our university’s core commitment to dignity, equality and inclusion.”
