SCOTUS ruling allows some fast-tracked deportations

The Supreme Court has sided with the Trump administration in a case that will allow some fast-tracked deportations.

The Court ruled 7-2 that a federal law, which limits an asylum-seeker’s ability to appeal determination that they lacked credible fear of persecution in their home country, is not unconstitutional.

Fox News reports the case centered on a Sri Lankan man who was apprehended within 25 yards of crossing the US-Mexico border. The asylum officer determined the man wasn’t eligible for relief because he said he didn’t fear racial, religious or political persecution, but rather said he was once abducted and beaten by a group of unknown assailants.

The decision means the federal government can deport certain individuals without providing an opportunity to argue their case before a federal judge.
