Chicago planning to merge migrant and homeless systems into one

The city of Chicago expected to announce today that would merge the homeless and migrant systems into a single program. The move is expected to boost efforts to keep unhoused citizens off the streets. Advocates for the homeless support the idea saying it help the unhoused and new arrivals with wrap around services like jobs, food and healthcare

Chicago first opened a shelter system for migrants in September of 2022 after Texas Governor Greg Abbott began sending asylum-seekers to Chicago since its a sanctuary city to make the point that resources were strained in towns along the border .
