Three people are reportedly dead after a small plane crashed Friday morning in Boca Raton, Florida, shortly after takeoff from the Boca Raton Airport, according to local news reports.
The plane’s crew had reported mechanical issues to the airport at around 10:17 a.m., according to Boca News Now. Initially, two people were reported dead, but that number was increased to include a third victim.
The deaths or identities of those involved have not been officially confirmed by authorities. No cause has been reported for the crash, which remains under investigation.
The plane, described as a Cessna 310R, was in the air for less than 20 minutes before it crashed near the railroad tracks and a busy highway, reports ABC News, quoting Flightradar24.
According to the FAA, the plane had taken off from the Boca Raton Airport and was heading to the Tallahassee International Airport.
Fires on the ground caused by the crash have been extinguished.
According to the Boca Raton Police Department, roads have been closed in the area of Military Trail and 19th Street. In addition, the exit from I-95 to Glades Road is closed, and the Glades Road overpass has been closed in all directions.
Videos from the crash showed smoke coming from several fires along the highway, and police were urging people to avoid the crash site, which occurred less than half a mile from Boca Raton High School.
The crash comes just hours after a family of five Spanish tourists was killed in a helicopter crash in New York City on Thursday. The aircraft crashed into the Hudson River while the family was flying over the New York City skyline on a sightseeing tour celebrating one of the children’s birthdays. The helicopter’s pilot also died in the crash.
