The U.S. finally has a leader, “someone who puts Americans first and … knows how to deal with tinhorn dictators,” Rep. Brian Babin, R-Texas, said Monday.
Colombia on Monday backed down in its dispute with President Donald Trump over the Colombian government’s refusal to accept repatriation flights of Colombian nationals.
Trump in a retaliatory response threatened to place an emergency 25% tariffs on goods coming into the U.S. from Colombia and said he would raise it in a week to 50%. He also threatened other sanctions on the longtime U.S. partner.
Colombia backed down quickly.
“I’m very, very proud to see this happening,” Babin told Newsmax TV’s “Chris Salcedo Show.”
“We haven’t seen it in four long years. And let me tell you something. This dictator’s initial refusal to take back their nationals underscores a problem that President Trump has been addressing for years, and that is foreign countries and foreigners taking advantage of America. And he’s not going to let it happen,” Babin added.
Colombian Foreign Minister Luis Gilberto Murillo in a statement said his country had “overcome the impasse with the United States government.
“We will continue to receive Colombians who return as deportees, guaranteeing them decent conditions as citizens subject to rights,” he added.
