(CHICAGO) The Archbishop of Mexico City will celebrate mass this Sunday at the Shrine of Our Lady of Guadalupe in Des Plaines.
It will be the first time that the Archbishop of Mexico City will visit the shrine. Cardinal Norberto Rivera will also be honored for his 50 years as a priest. He will be joined a the 4 p.m. mass by Rev. John Manz, Auxiliary Bishop of Chicago.
Since 1997 the shrine has been a place of pilgramage after being given permission by the Basilica of Our Lady of Guadalupe in Mexico to serve
as a place where the same special indulgences granted to pilgrims who visit the Basilica in Mexico City, be granted to pilgrims who visit the
shrine in Des Plaines. It is the only shrine in the United States that has been granted such permission.
The Chicago Archdiocese says more than 6,000 worshipers visit the shrine on a weekly basis.
