CTA Green, Pink Line service suspended because of man on tracks

(CHICAGO) CTA Green and Pink Line service was halted early Tuesday because of an unauthorized man on the tracks in the West Loop.

Police were called about 2:30 a.m. for reports of the man running back and forth on the tracks between Morgan and Carpenter, according to Chicago Police. The CTA has cut power to the tracks and police negotiators were on the scene trying to get the man to come down.

The CTA announced shortly after 4 a.m. that Green Line service was suspended between the Pulaski and Clark/Lake stations. Pink Line trains were only running to Polk and then connecting with the Blue Line at Racine. Shuttle buses are available for affected riders.

(CHICAGO) A CTA Green Line train was evacuated in the Loop Wednesday night after a garbage truck got caught in the electrical wires under the tracks and caused a power outage.

Part of the truck got caught in wiring under the CTA tracks on Lake near Post Place at 11:38 p.m., according to Chicago Police.

A train that was overhead at the time was stopped because of a power outage and the passengers were removed from the train, police said. No injuries were reported.

Service on the Brown, Green and Pink lines was temporarily disrupted because of the outage, according to the CTA. Green and Pink Line service was suspended between the Loop and Clinton for several hours, but resumed shortly before 2 a.m.

New Green Line station set to open on Near South Side

(CHICAGO) A new station on the CTA’s Green Line is expected to open early Monday morning on the Near South Side.

The Cermak-McCormick Place station was scheduled to open for service at 5 a.m. at 12 E. Cermak, according to the CTA’s website.

The new station provides access to McCormick Place, Motor Row and other destinations on the Near South Side, according to the transit agency.

It includes three entrances — one on the north side of Cermak, one on the south side of Cermak, and one at 23rd Street. The station features an “island platform” including full canopy coverage, heaters and benches, according to the agency.

It also includes bike racks, bright lighting and security cameras, new signage including digital displays, and farecard vending machines at all entrances.

Stun gun used to steal cell phone on South Loop CTA platform

(Chicago)  Police have released video surveillance photos of a suspect who threatened a woman with a stun gun to rob her of a cell phone last week on a South Loop CTA platform.

Police said about 2:38 p.m. on Friday, Jan, 23, the victim was transferring from the Red Line to the Green Line at the Roosevelt stop at 1167 S. State St. when the suspect displayed the “Taser” and demanded her phone.

The woman, “fearful for her safety,” gave him the phone and he ran away, an alert from police said.

The suspect is described as a black male 20-30, 5-foot-7 to 6-foot and 140-175 pounds with a medium complexion, according to police.

Construction to close portions of CTA Red, Green lines throughout weekend

(CHICAGO) Construction on CTA train tracks and stations will close portions of the Red and Green lines throughout the weekend.

From 10 p.m. Friday to 6 a.m. Sunday, southbound Red Line trains will be rerouted from the subway to operate on the elevated tracks between the Fullerton and Cermak-Chinatown stations as crews continue subway maintenance work, according to the CTA. Northbound Red Line service will not be affected.

Rerouted southbound Red Line trains will stop at the following elevated stations: Armitage, Sedgwick, Chicago/Franklin, Merchandise Mart, Clark/Lake, State/Lake, Randolph/Wabash, Madison/Wabash, Adams/Wabash and Roosevelt.

From 1:40 a.m. Saturday to 4 a.m. Monday, Green Line service between the Roosevelt and 35th-Bronzeville-IIT stations will be suspended as crews work on the construction of the new Cermak-McCormick Place station, the transit agency said.

Free bus shuttles will operate in both directions between the Roosevelt and 35th-Bronzeville-IIT stations to accommodate Green Line riders, the CTA said.

Passengers should plan for extra travel time on both train lines throughout the weekend. Normal Green and Red line service will be provided for the Monday morning commute.
