Pace adding 6 new bus routes along I-90 to NW suburbs

(CHICAGO) Six new Pace bus routes will start running this month along Interstate 90 between O’Hare International Airport and northwest suburban Elgin.

Starting Dec. 19, the second phase of the transit agency’s I-90 expansion program will also bring 25 new buses with free Wi-Fi, USB charging stations, overhead storage and comfortable, high-back seating, Pace says.

Improvements will also be implemented on five existing routes along the 27-mile corridor of the tollway, which Pace says is projected to have as many jobs as Chicago’s Loop by 2040.

The new routes provide convenient connections to the airport and the city via the CTA Blue Line station at Rosemont, and by the end of 2017, a new park-and-ride at Randall Road will accommodate 551 drivers, according to Pace.

The increased service was planned in coordination with the expansion of the tollway. Fares will hold steady at $1.75 with Ventra cards, or $2 in cash. For a full rundown of the new routes, visit Pace’s website.

Overnight lane closures begin for bridge painting near Tri-State, Jane Addams interchange

(ROSEMONT) Two weeks of overnight lane closures begin Tuesday on the Tri-State Tollway near Rosemont as crews prepare for a bridge painting project.

One southbound lane of the Tri-State (I-294) between at the Jane Addams Memorial Tollway (I-90) and Touhy Avenue will close at 8 p.m. Tuesday, with a second lane closing at 9 p.m., the tollway said. A third lane will close at midnight.

All lanes will reopen by 5 a.m. Wednesday for the morning rush, the tollway said.

The lane closures will allow crews to install a platform system connected to the underside of a bridge that workers will be painting, the tollway said.

Similar closures will take place over the next two weeks between Lawrence Avenue and I-90.

The painting project will last about a month, and require another set of roadway closures to remove the platform system when crews have finished, the tollway said.

Construction begins for bridge on Illinois Route 72 near I-90

(GILBERTS) Work on the Illinois Route 72 Bridge carrying traffic over the Jane Addams Memorial Tollway in Gilberts is scheduled to begin Monday to prepare for removal and reconstruction as part of the I-90 Rebuilding and Widening Project.

The Higgins Road Bridge will remain open, the Illinois Department of Transportation said. However, the bridge will be reduced to one lane over I-90 with traffic in both directions controlled by traffic signals during construction.

About 16,000 vehicles use this bridge daily, IDOT said.

Because the Higgins Road Bridge is a two-lane bridge, only one lane will be available to traffic during construction. Traffic signals will be used to control access for eastbound and westbound traffic using the single open lane in order to keep the bridge open during construction, IDOT said.

The temporary traffic signals are scheduled to be in place by late May, and construction will start on the westbound side of the bridge with all traffic traveling on the eastbound side of the bridge. The westbound side of the bridge is scheduled to reopen by late summer, and work will begin on the eastbound side of the bridge.

The project is scheduled to be completed by the end of 2015.
