Federal agency wants more information on proposed rail line

(MUNSTER) The federal Surface Transportation Board wants more information about a proposal for a 278-mile rail line from Indiana to Wisconsin aimed at relieving Chicago-area freight congestion.

The Times of Northwest Indiana reports (http://bit.ly/2d8dQQt ) the agency wants to know how many trains would run on the proposed Great Lakes Basin Railroad. It also wants more details on its planned connection to the South Shore Freight Railroad.

In letters dated Sept. 9 and Oct. 11, the board’s Office of Environmental Analysis detailed eight additional topics on which it wants more information than was provided in the railroad’s plans, including the average speed at which trains would travel and the average length of trains. The information is needed for a draft environmental impact statement.

UPDATED: Three Found Dead After Indiana Amber Alert

By Nick Gale, WLS-AM 890 News

(ELKHART, IN) An Indiana woman has been charged in the murder of her two young children after they were found dead Monday night.

An Amber Alert for Liliana Hernandez, 7, and Rene Pasztor, 6, was issued late Monday morning with police saying they had been kidnapped by their mother Amber Pasztor, 29.

Hours after that alert, police say Pasztor went to the Elkhart Police Department, flagged down an officer and said the children were dead.  Sgt. Chris Snyder says they were found in the backseat of her vehicle.

The coroner says the children died from asphyxia.  Pasztor has been charged with two counts of murder.

The body of a man found near the children’s home has been identified as 66-year old Frank Macomber.  He died of a gunshot wound and the death has been ruled a homicide.  Police believe Macomber was with the mother when the children were kidnapped.

(INDIANAPOLIS, IN) Donald Trump says if he defeats Ted Cruz in Indiana, he’ll seal the Republican presidential nomination.
“Yes, it’s over,” Trump said on “Fox News Sunday” when host Chris Wallace asked if a win in the Hoosier State Tuesday would end Cruz’s chances.
Trump is the front-runner in Indiana, according to a new NBC/Wall Street Journal/Marist poll that shows him leading with 49% compared to 34% for Cruz and 13% for Ohio Gov. John Kasich. Tuesday’s primary has 57 delegates on the line.
Trump pointed to Indiana Gov. Mike Pence’s endorsement of Cruz, noting that it only came after Pence lavished praise on Trump in an Indianapolis radio show appearance.
He said that Pence “gave me more of an endorsement than he gave Cruz,” and said Pence’s decision to back Cruz was influenced by “his donors and special interests.”
“Most people think it was more of an endorsement of me than it was for Cruz. And it was the weakest endorsement anyone has seen in a long time,” Trump said of Pence’s endorsement of Cruz.
Trump also dismissed poll numbers that show him struggling with female voters, predicting that Clinton would crater once he’s able to focus all of his attention on her.
He said he’ll use Bernie Sanders’ primary attacks that Clinton is “not qualified” for the presidency due to her close ties to Wall Street and stances on issues like trade against Clinton in the general election.
“I’m going to use that. We’ll have that teed up,” Trump said.
He added: “What he said was incredible. It’s a soundbite.”
Also on “Fox News Sunday,” Cruz took a shot at Trump, highlighting the endorsement the mogul got from Mike Tyson — the boxer who spent three years in prison in Indiana after a rape conviction.
“Donald said Mike Tyson is a ‘tough guy.’ Well I don’t think rapists are tough guys,” Cruz said.

I-65 to be Widened in Northwest Indiana

By Nick Gale, WLS News

(NORTHWEST INDIANA) A major upgrade to I-65 in Northwest Indiana should help traffic flow.

As part of a plan to upgrade state highways by 2020, Indiana plans to widen Interstate 65 in Lake County to three lanes in each direction from Merrillville south to at least State Road 2 near Lowell.

The project is budgeted at $70 million and later this month the Indiana Department of Transportation will seek State Budget Committee approval to use the funds and publish an initial request for contractor and designer qualifications.

Construction could start in the spring of 2017.

The driver, a 48-year-old Hobart man, was not hurt in the crash, which happened on a ramp from State Route 249 to I-94 near Portage, according to Indiana State Police.

The truck was pulling a flatbed trailer with a steel coil weighing 45,000 pounds, State Police said.

As the driver entered the ramp, he started to sneeze, which caused the truck to run off the roadway and onto a grassy area where the rig rolled onto its side, State Police said.

Crews later put the semi back on its wheels. No fuel spilled, and no lanes were closed during the response.

Road rage leads to shots fired at Chicago man

(LAKE STATION, Ind.)  A ride through northwest Indiana almost turned deadly for a Chicago man after some mutual road rage turned into gunshots being fired at him on I-80/94.

What Indiana State Police called a “road rage incident turned ugly” started about 11 a.m. Tuesday when the 28-year-old Chicago man, driving a 2003 Acura, got involved in some unpleasantness in the eastbound lanes of the Borman Expy. in Lake County.

Police said it started when the victim and another driver “became involved in road rage”—things like not letting the other car pass and flipping the driver off, a statement from ISP said.

But as the Acura approached the Route 51 exit in Lake Station, the other car, a black 1997 BMW, pulled alongside and the back window of the Acura “exploded,”police said.

The Chicago man then looked over and saw the other driver pointing what he thought was a gun, and driver of the BMW then fired a second shot, police said. The Acura then exited the expressway at the Indiana Toll Road exit near Portage and the driver called 911.

An ISP trooper was able to pull over the BMW on eastbound I-94 near the Michigan City/LaPorte exit, and found what turned out to be a CO2-powered BB gun and a 45 semi automatic handgun inside, according to police.

The driver, 24-year-old Emmanuel Antonio Ontiveros-Leyva of South Bend, Ind., was charged with criminal recklessness and taken to the Lake County Jail in Crown Point, police said. Additional charges may be pending.
