Wintry mix to make Tuesday morning commute an icy hazard

(Chicago)  A mix of snow, sleet and freezing rain will make Tuesday morning’s commute hazardous.

A winter weather advisory will be in effect from 3 a.m. until noon Tuesday, according to the National Weather Service.

The wintry mix of precipitation will begin overnight as snow, especially north of I-80, according to the weather service. Between one and two inches of snow could fall near the Wisconsin border, with about an inch is expected in the Chicago area.

As the morning continues and temperatures warm, the snow will transition to sleet or freezing rain.

The wet snow combined with slippery roads and limited visibility could lead to a hazardous commute, according to the weather service.

The high Tuesday is expected to reach 35 or 40 degrees, according to the weather service, so by the afternoon, the precipitation will transition to light rain or drizzle in Chicago.

The relative warmth won’t last long though. Wednesday will be partly sunny with a high only near 17 degrees, according to the weather service.
